HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team overcame an eight point deficit in the fourth quarter and upset Hastings College in GPAC play at the De Witt Gym on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.

Playing front of a Senior Day crowd the Defenders used a 16 point run spanning the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to turn a 14-9 deficit into a 25-14 advantage after an Ebby Prewitt basket with 8:24 left in the first half.

Dordt was unable to expand on the lead and held a 32-26 halftime edge.

A basket by Rachel Evavold put Dordt up by nine with 7:52 left in the third quarter but the Broncos rallied from the 37-28 deficit to tie the game at 43-43 with 2:27 left in the quarter and then took the first lead since the opening minutes on a Gabby Grasso basket.  Hastings led 48-45 at the end of the third quarter after Dordt’s Jordyn Van Maanen had locked the score up at 45-45.

A basket with 7:51 left in the game put Hastings up 55-47 and the Broncos appeared ready to fend of Dordt’s upset attempt.   Hastings’s lead was still six with 5:44 and the score at 59-53.  Mya Chmielewski’s basket cut it to four and after a Dordt stop Prewitt converted her second three-point shot of the game to make it 59-58.

With 3:05 left the Defenders got another stop and Karly Gustafson converted a putback of her own miss to give Dordt the lead and she converted the ensuing free throw for a 61-59 lead.

The teams exchanged leads and a Bailey Beckman free throw tied it 64-64 with :56 left in the game for the tenth tie of the game.   Hastings got a shot off with :28 left and Dordt secured the rebound.  Beckman’s lay up attempt was blocked out of bounds with :20 left. After  timeout the Defenders got the ball to Rachel Evavold who made a shot with her right hand as she spun through the lane for a 66-64 lead.

Evavold’s basket came with :05 left. After a Hastings timeout the Defenders were able to foul to take more time off the clock and force Hastings to inbound one more time with 2.9 left.
