HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team was on the short end of a 90-65 score with the Morningside Mustangs on Saturday night in a clash of teams ranked in the top-10 in the country.

The Defenders started well and had an 18-10 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter after a basket by Baylee Tetzlaff.  An 8-0 run by the visitors tied the score before Rachel Evavold’s two free throws put Dordt up 20-18 after the first period.

The Mustangs seized control of the game with a 20-3 run to start the second quarter and took a 50-29 lead into the half. Dordt got as close as 14 once in the second half but the visitors were able to hold Dordt at bay and held on to third place in the GPAC race with the win.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt was 22-60 from the field and 3-21 from the three-point line while converting 18-26 free throws.

Morningside was 33-73 from the field and 9-28 from the arc while converting 15-23 free throws.

Dordt had a 48-39 rebounding advantage but was hindered by 28 turnovers as Morningside took 14 away by steal.

Rachel Evavold had 14 points to lead Dordt.

Baylee Tetzlaff added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Erika Feenstra had 10 points for the Defenders with nine rebounds.

Morningside got 30 points from Sierra Mitchell.

Dordt will host Jamestown on Thursday, January 23 and will travel to Doane on Saturday, January 25.
