Dordt def. Haskell 80-61

The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team trailed once and controlled much of its game with Haskell (Kansas) on Friday afternoon in Orange City. The Defenders improved to 5-0 this season with the non-conference win.

Haskell scored the first basket of the game to lead 2-0  but a Jordyn Van Maanen three-point shot with 7:52 left in the first quarter put Dordt up 3-2.  An Erika Feenstra free throw a little over a minute later made it 6-3 and the two teams would suffer a scoring drought for the next three minutes with the two teams stuck at that score.

Rachel Evavold was able to get Dordt an 8-3 lead and the Defenders appeared poised to blow the game open early with a 15-13 edge, holding Haskell without a point for over seven minutes. Haskell eventually scored the final five points of the quarter to get within 15-8 at the break.

The Defenders struggled with Haskell’s sagging defense and the school from Kansas cut the lead all the way down to 20-17 with 6:18 left in the half. A Bailey Beckman basket put Dordt up by five and ignited an 11-0 run that ended with Gabby Kreykes scoring on a pair of free throws for a 31-17 lead with 3:50 left in the half.   The run of points included back to back three-point shots by Payton Harmsen.  Harmsen converted her fifth three-point shot of the first half with under a minute to go in the half and Dordt led 39-27 at the break.

Dordt pushed the lead past 20 in the third quarter and led 62-46 at the end of the third quarter. Dordt was able to spread the minutes out liberally in the entire second half and the fourth quarter was played at 17 to 21 point difference with Dordt settling for a 80-61 win.

Dordt was 27-60 from the field and 12-30 from the three-point line.

Haskell was 21-61 from the field and 6-20 from the arc.
