Dordt defeats Waldorf 113-40
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team won in dominating fashion on Friday night in its season opener, taking a 113-40 win from the Waldorf Warriors in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt jumped out to a quick 15-2 lead midway through the first quarter and led 35-10 at the end of the first quarter. The difference stayed in the 25-30 point range much of the second quarter and Dordt’s lead was 56-30 at halftime.
Waldorf scored five of the first nine points and trailed 60-35 with 8:06 left in the third quarter. Five straight points by Erika Feenstra ignited what became a 22 point run with Waldorf stopping the run with a pair of free throws with 2:29 left in the period. A two-point basket by Rachel Evavold put Dordt up 87-37 to end the third period.
The two teams traded baskets to start the fourth period as the visitors got a three-point basket with 9:21 left in the game and they wouldn’t score again. Dordt ended the game with a 24 point run.
Dordt converted 45-72 field goals for 62.5 percent and was 7-16 from the three-point line.
Waldorf as limited to 13-54 from the field for 24.1 percent and 6-18 from the three-point arc.
Dordt forced 35 turnovers and had a 45-27 rebounding advantage.
Erika Feenstra led Dordt with 26 points and she was 10-11 from the field.
Rachel Evavold and Gabby Kreykes each had 12 points and Baylee Tenextzlaff had 11 points.
All 14 Defenders in uniform scored and played at least seven minutes.
Waldorf was topped by Morgan Straight with 13 points.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
Erika Feenstra and Rachel Evavold both surpassed 1,000 career points with Feenstra now at 1,006 points and Evavold has 1,004. They are the 16th and 17th Dordt women’s basketball players to surpass 1,000 points in their career.
Dordt is now 1-0 and Waldorf falls to 0-1.
Dordt will face Buena Vista on Tuesday night, October 29 before going to Chicago to play a couple games next weekend.
