Dordt def. Huston-Tillotson 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-10, 25-17)

The Dordt Defender volleyball team started slow but closed quickly in improving to 8-3 this season with a 3-1 win over Huston-Tillotson on Saturday, September 7 in Parkville, Missouri.

The Defenders did have a 6-3 lead in set one after five straight points but allowed a 7-0 run to go from up 9-8 to down 15-9. That run proved to be enough for the Rams in winning the set 25-18.

The Defenders were able to regroup in set two, this time using a run of their own to go from down 8-7 to up 11-8 with a service error by the Rams, an Emma Bousema ace, an attack error and a kill by Ava Van Soelen. Dordt never relinquished the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-22.

Set three saw Dordt go up 15-10 and then close the set on a 10-0 run with Karsyn Winterfeld accounting for three kills.  Huston Tillotson tried to rebound and had a 6-4 lead in set four but Dordt tied it at 6-6 with a Jori Bronner kill followed by a Winterfeld kill and then a five point run put Dordt up 12-8. The lead shrunk to 14-13.

Corrina Timmermans started the run with a kill and Ally Krommendyk had one as well. Both Timmermans and Krommendyk got credit for a block in what turned out to be a five point run.  With the 19-13 cushion the Defenders closed with a 6-4 advantage and won the set on a kill by Bronner for the 25-17 final.

Dordt had 53 kills and a .185 kill efficiency.

Dordt had a 3-1 ace serves advantage and had 15 points on blocks to 11 for Huston-Tillotson.

Ally Krommendyk and Karsyn Winterfeld had 11 kills.  Winterfeld also handled 35 serve receptions cleanly. Krommendyk was in on eight total blocks.

Jessi De Jager and Jori Bronner each had nine kills and Van Soelen had seven. De Jager accounted for five blocks as did Timmermans.

Megan Raszler had 34 assists and Feilmeier 15.

Hannah Connelly and Erica Bousema had 22 and 19 digs respectively.

“We are pleased that after a slow start by us against a very gritty opponent, we were able to pick up our intensity and finish a strong match. Our block came alive after the first set and that also helped us gain confidence.”
