Rocky Mountain def. Dordt 3-2 (25-18, 26-24, 11-25, 17-25, 15-13)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt stumbled and lost to nationally ranked Rocky Mountain (Montana) in its final match of the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic at Bellevue, Nebraska on Saturday, August 31.
Dordt lost the first set 25-18 as the Defenders started slowly and were unable to dig out of an initial 5-1 hole and lost 25-18.
In set two the Grizzlies got up 5-2 before Dordt rallied and eventually got to within 7-6 on a Karsyn Winterfeld kill. Three Rocky Mountain points in a row put them in front 10-6 but Dordt again answered, this time using a 5-0 run to lead 18-14. Dordt maintained that four point lead at 22-18 after an Ally Krommendyk kill.
Rocky Mountain came back, recording four points in a row on attack errors and they took the lead with a kill. After a Dordt timeout Lydia Smits got a kill and Ally Krommendyk got Dordt to set point with a kill. This time it was Rocky Mountain calling a timeout and the Grizzlies responded with a three point run to win 26-24 and take a 2-0 lead in the best of five match.
Set three was all Dordt as the Defenders vaulted to a 15-4 lead and rolled to a 25-11 victory. Set four was more of the same with Dordt leading 10-4 and the Defender maintained at least a three point lead after it was 10-8 and won 25-17 to force a decisive fifth set.
Set five saw the score tied at 6-6 after Corrina Timmermans put down a kill. Krommendyk and Timmermans had kills in succession and an attack error put Dordt up 9-6. Rocky Mountained tightened the set and actually took a 12-11 lead before Dordt’s Bronner got a kill for a 12-12 tie. The teams exchanged points to 13-13 before back to back kills by the Grizzlies ended the match.
Dordt had a 76-56 kills advantage and hit for a .255 kill efficiency.
Dordt had a slight 9-8 blocks advantage.
Dordt committed six service errors and Rocky Mountain had two.
Krommendyk had 17 kills to lead all players.
Bronner had 16 kills and Jessi De Jager put down 14.
Timmermans had 13 kills while Winterfeld and Van Soelen each had seven.
Megan Raszler put up 39 assists and Emily Feilmeier had 23.
Hannah Connelly got to a match high 22digs.
Dordt is 6-2 entering GPAC play on Tuesday at Jamestown.
