The Dordt Defender volleyball team had to overcome a 2-1 sets deficit to defeat no. 16 ranked Aquinas on Saturday, August 31 at the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic.

The Saints were in control in set one after establishing a 9-5 lead and maintained at least a five point lead from the 14-9 point on before winning 25-19.

Set two saw the Defenders fall behind 3-0 to start but Dordt came back to lead 15-12.  Aquinas eventually got to within one at 16-15 and again at 17-16. Dordt’s points came on a kill each by Winterfeld and Ava Van Soelen along with two Aquinas attack errors and a block by Krommendyk and Winterfeld to finish it.

Dordt never trailed in set five, pulling away from a 5-4 advantage to an 8-4 lead. Dordt as still up 14-11 after a Timmermans kill got Dordt to set and match point but Aquinas rallied with three straight points on a pair of kills and an ace serve.

“We found some new levels of confidence against a very motivated and competitive Aquinas team. The important take away for us from this match was to find every moment to connect with our teammates and truly love the play time we get to have together.”
