HOW IT HAPPENEDThe Dordt men's soccer team defeated the Viterbo V-Hawks 5-0 in their season opener on Saturday. First year head coach Ryan Gresse secured his first win of his career in impressive fashion.
Dordt's Patrick Munsey started the scoring two minutes into the game with a chip over the keeper inside the 18-yard box. GideoN De Graaf assisted on the goal.
Dordt kept possession for the majority of the first half and combined for some solid opportunities. Gideon De Graaf found the back of the net ten minutes later on a diving header thanks to a Luke Foster cross.
The rest of the first half was back-and-forth with the V-Hawks settling in defensively. The Defenders were content to stay patient and try to create out of their back line.
Munsey scored three minutes into the second half to stretch the Dordt lead to three. Nine minutes later, David Benthem snuck through on a breakaway to give the Defenders a four goal lead.
Jebadiah Merkle scored the final goal for Dordt in the 80th minute off of a Mason Stolle cross.
DORDT NUMBERSDordt had 13 shots in the game and eight were on net. Four different players scored for Dordt.
Seth Lewison had two saves in the shutout.
VITERBO NUMBERSThe V-Hawks had three shots in the game.
Goalkeeper Nate Regas had three saves.
Two players earned red cards in the match giving Dordt an 11-9 advantage in the final five minutes.
COACH GRESSE SAID"The result was an encouraging way to begin the season. The team has put in a lot of work in the offseason and it showed today. They deserve it. We have taken well to the system of play we implemented. That being said, there is still a lot of work to do in order to progress where we would like to be. Our goal is to build on each game and keep growing as we go."
UP NEXTDordt will face-off against Friends University at 5:00 p.m. in Sioux Center next Saturday.
