Concordia defeats Dordt 5-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders built a 4-0 lead after three innings but the Concordia Bulldogs forged a comeback and secured a 5-4 victory in game two of the doubleheader to secure a sweep.
Dordt got one each in the first and second innings with Carissa Vanden Berg clubbing a leadoff homer to start the game and Carley De Roin scored in the second without virtue of a hit as she was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch, advanced on an error and then scored on a rundown.
Dordt added two to the lead with a Rachel Evavold double and Hailey Heeringa triple each knocking in a run.
The 4-0 lead lasted until the sixth inning when Concordia got two runs on three hits and held Dordt scoreless in the seventh as the Defenders stranded two runners. A single and a double started the seventh for Concordia and a pinch hit three-run homerun ended it with Concordia prevailing 5-4.
Dordt was outhit 10-7.
Marissa Vanden Berg had a double and a homerun while Rachel Evavold and Hailey Heeringa had two hits each.
Erin Bredemus also had a single and Heeringa reached on a walk.
Evavold takes the loss with five runs allowed on 10 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Dordt is 18-21 this season and 10-12 in the league.
Concordia is 26-10 overall and 15-7 in league play.
Dordt will finish no worse than a two-way tie for seventh place and no better than a three-way tie for sixth as there are still two doubleheaders to be played to conclude the GPAC regular season.
Dordt will advance to post-season play and awaits its assignment to either Midland or Morningside for a double elimination four team bracket next weekend.
