Dordt defeats College of Saint Mary 3-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender softball team managed a split of their doubleheader by hanging on to win a 3-2 decision from the College of Saint Mary Flames on Saturday afternoon in Omaha.
The Defenders got a run in the first when Rachel Evavold doubled in a Kenzie Cunard who had walked with one out. A further threat was squelched with a double play.
Evavold’s next at bat resulted in her second double of the day and scored Marissa Vanden Berg who was on after singling with one out in the third inning.
Dordt added a run in the fifth inning Hailey Heeringa singling in Cunard. Cunard reached initially on a fielder’s choice.
The Defenders then held on as the Flames scored two in the seventh. The Flames also had a runner thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice and the game ended with the bases loaded and Dordt clinging to the 3-2 final decision.
Dordt’s Tianna Soodsma got the complete game win with two runs allowed with six hits and five strikeouts.
Vanden Berg and Evavold had two hits each and Evaold knocked in two runs. Heeringa accounted for Dordt’s other hit as the Defenders made the most of five hits.
Dordt will host Morningside on Monday, April 15 starting at 4:00.
Dordt is 13-16 overall and 7-7 in GPAC play.
The Flames are 11-22 overall and 4-8 in GPAC action.
