Hastings defeats Dordt 3-0
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders surrendered two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth and couldn’t mount an answer and fell 3-0 to the Hastings Broncos on Friday, April 5 in game one of their doubleheader in Hastings, Nebraska.
Dordt sidestepped trouble in the bottom of the first when Hastings left the bases loaded and the hosts left two on base in the fifth inning as the game remained scoreless.
Dordt’s best chance came in the top of the fifth when Abby Smith walked and pinch runner Jennifer Kooiker stole second. Brooklyn Van Oort walked and Cunard advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout Marissa Vanden Berg walked but a ground out ended the inning.
Hastings got two in the fifth on four hits and added another on three hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth.
The Defenders did get a threat going in the seventh when Cunard bunted her way on with a single and Erin Bredemus singled to get the tying run to the plate. A strikeout and a ground out ended the inning and the game.
Marissa Vanden Berg, Rachel Evavold, Cunard and Bredemus accounted for Dordt’s four hits and Evavold had the only extra base hit of the four with a double.
Tianna Soodsma allowed 11 hits with three runs and three strikeouts and no walks.
Dordt was outhit 11-4.
The Defenders had four walks and struck out 10 times in the loss.
