Dordt def. Valley City State 71-59
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College controlled much of the game and scored a 71-59 win over Valley City State on Friday night in Sioux Center.
The Defenders led 15-13 after one quarter and eventually built a 10 point lead 31-21 with 3:56 left in the first half when Payton Harmsen knocked down a three-point basket Annie Rhinesmith added a three-point shot moments later as the teams exchanged baskets. Valley City State scored a basket with 2:43 left in the half to cut the lead to 34-26 and that score held to halftime.
Dordt scored eight points in a row to start the second half and an Erika Feenstra basket with 7:23 left in the third quarter gave Dordt a 46-28 advantage. Dordt’s lead grew to 21 before the Defenders settled for a 57-39 third quarter lead.
Valley City State did put together a rally and closed to 67-59 with less than a minute left but Annie Rhinesmith made four free throws in a row as Dordt won the 71-59 decision.
Dordt was 23-62 from the field for 37 percent and made 6-28 three-point shots.
Valley City State was 23-66 from the field for 35 percent success and made 7-31 three-point shots.
Dordt converted 19-21 free throws and Valley City State got to the free throw line just eight times and made six.
Valley City State had a slight 42-41 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 20 times to 15 for the Defenders.
Feenstra led Dordt with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Harmsen had 17 points and hit three-three point baskets.
Annie Rhinesmith had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Rachel Evavold had seven points and dealt with foul trouble most of the night.
Kate Williams topped Valley City State with 13 and took in nine rebounds.
Dordt is 3-0 while Valley City State is 1-2.
