HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Blades nearly snuck out their first victory of the year, but surrendered a late goal to Missouri State to lose 4-3.
Logan Visser broke the 0-0 deadlock 50 seconds into the game to give the Blades a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Caleb Groot finished a Mark Schouten assist to stretch the Dordt lead to two.
Nathan Hendrix put Missouri State on the board at the end of the first to pull the Bears to within one heading into the second.
Both teams amassed a combined eight penalties in the second period, but only one goal. Visser scored his second of the game with less than two minutes to go and gave the Blades the two goal lead heading into the third.
The first eight minutes of the third went by without any spectacular chances, but Dordt got penalized twice in less than a minute and were forced to play 5-3. Branden Baldwin had an easy slap shot 30 seconds into the 5-3 that found the back of the net and cut the Bears deficit to one.
Two minutes later Christian Cuozzo tied the game at three.
Dordt let in the game winner with less than two minutes left and suffered the 4-3 loss.
The teams combined for 17 penalties.
David Burns played all 60 minutes in net and had 30 saves.
Dordt put 34 shots on goal.
Dordt will face off against Missouri State again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
