Mount Marty defeats Dordt 3-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt stumbled in game two against Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota and lost the GPAC contest 3-2. Dordt played as the home team because the game was originally scheduled to be played in Sioux Center but was moved for more playable field conditions.
Dordt scored in the second inning when Abby Smith singled in Carley De Roin but the Defenders couldn’t get the extra hit and left two runners on base.
Mount Marty tied it with one run on one hit in the bottom of the third inning and the score remained tied until the fifth inning when Rachel Evavold lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfield that scored Hannah Sikkema. The Defenders again missed the big inning with two runners left on base.
A single in the top of the sixth inning followed by a homerun gave the Lancers the lead.
Dordt was retired in order in the sixth and got the tying run to second base before a ground out ended the game in the seventh.
Dordt was outhit 5-3 with Marissa VandenBerg, Carley DeRoin and Abby Smith all getting a hit each. DeRoin’s double was the only extra base hit of the day for the Defenders.
Tianna Top took the loss while giving up three runs—two of them earned, and struck out six with no walks and she allowed five hits.
Dordt stranded seven base runners in the loss.
Dordt is 11-10 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.
Mount Marty is 6-10 and 2-0 in the league.
Dordt resumes play on April 3 against Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell.
