Midland def. Dordt 71-64


The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team lost a seven point decision at home on Saturday afternoon in GPAC play with the Midland Warriors.

Dordt started the game with an 8-4 run and led 11-7 as Annie Rhinesmith hit a three-point basket with 4:24 left in the first quarter. Dordt extended the lead to 15-10 on a Mya Chmielewski free throw but five straight points tied the game but Dordt managed to take a 20-17 lead at the end of the period.

Rachel Evavold scored a field goal to start the second quarter for a five point lead again but Midland went on a 10-0 run to go from down 24-20 to up 30-24 and the Defenders never led again. The Warriors were up 36-30 after one half and Dordt scored a basket by Erika Feenstra to start the second half.

Midland responded by getting the lead up to as many as 15 in the third quarter and led 57-45 going into the final period. Midland went up 59-45 with a basket at the 8:11 mark before Dordt went on a five point run. A basket by the visitors pushed the difference to 61-50 with 6:29 left in the game. A pair of Feenstra free throws stared a 9-0 run for the Defenders that got them within 61-59 with 3:12 left in the game after Rhinesmith buried a straight on three-point basket.

Dordt had two steals over the next two minutes but couldn’t convert on either opportunity. The Defenders never had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead again and Midland converted eight straight free throws in the final 33 seconds to preserve the 71-64 win.


Dordt was 22-60 from the field and 5-20 from the three-point line while converting 15-18 free throws.

Midland was 22-54 from the field and 8-21 from the arc and 19-21 from the free throw line.

Dordt was outrebounded 36-35 and both teams had 19 turnovers and 14 steals.


Rachel Evavold scored 20 and had four assists and two steals.

Annie Rhinesmith had 15 points and had four assists.

Erika Feenstra scored nine and had five rebounds.

Siennah Stamness had a team high eight rebounds and Payton Harmsen had three steals.


Lexis Haase had 21 points and six rebounds with three steals.

Maddie Egr added 16 points and had six rebounds with one steal.

Amanda Hansen scored 12.


Dordt is 12-8 in the league and 19-9 overall.

Midland is 10-10 and 15-11 overall.


“What it boils down to is did we approach this game with the mental edge that we should have? Did we prepare ourselves well enough to come into this game and have success? Statistically we can tear these stat sheets apart but I just didn’t think we played with enough pep in our step and energy as we did on Wednesday night.”
