Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 95-92


The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team couldn’t run its winning streak to four as it fell at home to the Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC play on Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym by a score of 95-92.

Dordt controlled much of the first half, taking the lead at 7-5 on an Alec Henrickson basket and the Defenders built the lead to 17 on a free throw by Ben Gesink with :27 left in the half before settling for a 48-34 halftime edge.

The teams traded baskets early and Dordt was still up 57-43 with 16:38 left in the half before the Chargers went on a 14-0 run to tie the game at the 12:52 mark.  Jesse Jansma made a basket in the lane to stop the run but the Chargers took the lead with a three-point basket and took the lead for good on a pair of Jackson Lamb free throws at the 12:00 mark for a 62-61 edge.

The lead grew to as many as 11 at 84-73 before Dordt rallied and had the lead at 86-84 after a Gesink basket with 1:37 left. Dordt didn’t have a chance to tie the game until it forced a turnover late in the game and Garrett Franken’s three-point basket spun out with :17 left and Briar Cliff made its free throws to preserve the win.  


Dordt was 35-72 from the field but just 5-26 from the three-point line while converting 17-21 free throws.

Briar Cliff was 32-62 from the field and 12-32 from the arc and made all 19 of its free throw tries.

Dordt had 11 turnovers and Briar Cliff 16.

Dordt had a 37-32 rebounding advantage.


Jesse Jansma scored 22 on 8-16 shooting and he had four made three-point baskets.

Alec Henrickson converted 13 points with five rebounds.

Garrett Franken scored 12 with six rebounds.

Chad Barkema and Ben Gesink each had 11 points and Barkema had five rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and four steals.


Jackson Lamb had 30 points and nine rebounds with six steals.

Ethan Freidel scored 24 and Jay Wolfe had 19 as the three leading scorers for Briar Cliff combined to go 24-46 from the field and had 11 made three-point baskets.

Dordt is 10-9 in the GPAC and 18-11 overall.

Briar Cliff is 14-6 in the GPAC and 20-7 overall.


Dordt will travel to Hastings to conclude the regular season.
