Morningside defeats Dordt 94-92
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt fell by two points against the Morningside Mustangs on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City.
Dordt bounced back from a slow start and trailed 15-4 with just over five minutes gone in the game.
A Ben Gesink three-point basket got Dordt back on the board but the hosts were up 37-22 with 5:55 left in the half. Alec Henrickson knocked down a three-point shots and Jesse Jansma followed with a three-pointer to get the lead to single digits. Dordt as down 44-37 with 1:39 left in the half but Ben Gesink scored on back to back baskets and Garrett Franken tied it with a three-point basket just before the half ended and the teams went to the break 44-44.
Dordt continued the run and outscored the hosts 12-5 to start the half with Gesink converting a basket at the 17:23 mark. Dordt maintained control and led 75-67 with 8:07 left after Henrickson converted a three-point shot.
The lead was still eight after a Gesink basket at the 6:25 mark for an 80-72 lead but the hosts scored seven in a row over the next minute before Henrickson knocked down a basket for an 82-79 lead.
Morningside tied the game at 82 and it was tied again at 84. The final tie came on a pair of Henrickson free throws with 2:26 remaining for an 88-88 tie. Morningside scored a basket to go up 90-88 and then converted a steal for a dunk at the :45 mark.
Josh Van Lingen had a basket to get the difference to 92-90. The two teams swapped baskets and Dordt was forced to foul. Morningside missed the front end of a one and one with :03 left but Dordt’s length of the court pass was picked off on the other end of the floor and the game ended 94-92.
Dordt was 33-56 from the field and 15-29 from the three-point line with 11-14 success from the free throw line.
Morningside was 35-69 from the field and 14-30 from the three-point line and made 10-13 free throws.
Dordt was outrebounded 31-30.
The Defender committed 17 turnovers while Morningside had 10.
Dordt’s Alec Henrickson matched a career high with 36 points and made 11-13 field goals including 6-8 three-point shots. The six made three-point baskets tied a career high.
Josh Van Lingen scored 18 and had seven rebounds.
Garrett Franken had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Ben Gesink had 12 points and Jesse Jansma had seven points with six assists.
Tyler Borchers led Morningside with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Matt Hahn scored 20 with five assists.
Alex Borchers scored 14 and Pierce Almond had 12.
Brody Egger added 10 points with nine rebounds.
Dordt is 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the GPAC.
Morningside is 17-1 this season and 10-1 in the league.
Dordt will host Mount Marty on Wednesday, January 16.
