Dordt defeats Viterbo 73-69
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team took control late and won a four-point decision from Viterbo in non-conference basketball played at Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa on Friday afternoon.
There were four ties early with the final in the string coming at 19-19 with 7:01 left in the first half on a Zach Bussard basket. An Alec Henrickson three-point basket eventually extended the lead to 30-24 with 3:29 remaining but a steal and basket by Tyree Young for Viterbo and a putback dunk by Cade Anderson cut the lead to 30-28. The putback dunk was Viterbo’s only offensive rebound of the first half.
Jesse Jansma gave Dordt a 32-30 lead early in the second half after Viterbo had tied it but an 8-0 run put the V-Hawks up 38-32 with 16:14 left in the game.
A Zach Bussard three-point play stopped the bleeding and Bussard eventually gave Dordt a 41-40 lead with a basket at the 13:11 mark.
The Dordt lead grew to as many as seven on two occasions with Garrett Franken getting a basket with 8:15 left for a 54-47 edge. Five unanswered by Viterbo got the difference to 54-52 and the difference was one on three occasions but Dordt never relinquished the lead.
Leading 62-61 Dordt got a three-point basket by Jansma with 2:13 left and the sophomore converted four straight free throws on the next two possessions to put the game out of reach at 69-61 with 1:08 remaining and Dordt held on to win 73-69 with a late three by Viterbo bringing it from seven down to the final margin of three.
Dordt was 23-67 from the field and 8-28 from the three-point line (4-14 in each half) and 19-22 from the free throw line.
Viterbo was 27-60 from the field and 8-23 from the three-point arc with 7-10 success from the free throw line.
Dordt had a 41-38 rebounding edge and had 12 offensive rebounds with five for the V-Hawks.
Dordt committed 10 turnovers to 13 for Viterbo.
Zach Bussard had 16 points and six rebounds.
Alec Henrickson added 14 points and two assists.
Jesse Jansma scored 14 with 11 in the second half and had three assists.
Chad Barkema had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Chandler Brunsting had eight points and three assists.
DAKOTA STATE’S LEADERS
Jason Tichy had 17 points.
Robert Cunitz had 11 points and four rebounds.
Cade Anderson and Jezzriah Burton each had 10 points and four rebounds.
COACH VAN HAAFTEN SAID
“We didn’t play that bad….we just didn’t make some shots. We had to get a few offensive rebounds and take care of the basketball—which we did and make a few free throws along the way, which we made 19-22. Defensively I thought we played pretty well and kept them off the glass."
Dordt is 11-5 while Viterbo falls to 8-5.
Dordt faces Friends (Kansas) on Saturday at 2:00 at Orange City.
