Jamestown defeats Dordt 96-89 overtime

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Jamestown Jimmies overcame a 12 point second half deficit to force overtime and won a 96-89 decision from Dordt after the extra session.

Dordt was up 39-32 at the end of the first half and quickly built the lead to 46-34 with 18:30 left in regulation.  Jamestown recovered quickly and took its first lead of the second half with a 52-51 advantage at the 14:11 mark.

For the next seven minutes neither team led by more than three until Jamestown’s Jon Purintun converted a basket for a 69-65 lead.  Dordt scored the next six points on a three-point basket by Alec Henrickson and pair of free throws also by Henrickson. Zach Bussard had the other point in the run with a free throw.

Josh Van Lingen converted three-straight three-pointers late in the game as the teams exchanged made baskets and a long two by Garrett Franken put the Defenders up 84-82 with just under a minute left in regulation. Dordt got a defensive stop and had the basketball with :49 remaining. Dordt turned it over with seven seconds later and that led to a breakaway layup to tie the game.

Dordt ran the clock down to nine seconds but Jesse Jansma’s shot in the lane was blocked and Jamestown missed on their possession in transition with two seconds left. A desperation heave after a timeout by Dordt was off the mark and the teams went to the extra period.

Dordt’s last lead was at 89-88 after a Jansma basket with 1:53 left and Jamestown scored the final eight points—the last three were a free throw with :11 left and a lay-up when the game was already decided with :04 left.

COACH VAN HAAFTEN SAID

“I didn’t think we were clean tonight. I thought we made a lot of mistakes offensively and defensively on the floor. I was happy with how we executed down the stretch.  Down three we came out and ran our play and Jesse made the perfect pass to Chandler for an open three over there and it just rimmed in and out. We’re going to try to keep getting better. We had a chance at 84-82 to put the game away and that’s something we’ve done really well this year but it didn’t happen in this game.”
