Morningside defeats Dordt 77-66
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College battled the GPAC favorite Morningside Mustangs even for the first 31 minutes of its game Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center. The Mustangs used a late run to win an 11 point decision in the early conference contest.
The first half featured ten lead changes with the largest gap being five points. Morningside’s Brody Egger hit a buzzer beater to break a 32-32 tie and give the visitors a three-point lead at the intermission.
The first four minutes of the second half featured five lead changes with the Defenders taking a 40-39 lead on a Chad Barkema basket. Garrett Franken had a two point shot and followed that with a three-point basket to end the seven point run and five Dordt a 45-39 lead with 14:44 left in the game.
The lead was still six when Jesse Jansma converted a three-point shot at the 11:34 mark but Morningside scored the next 11 points to lead 58-53 and never trailed again as Dordt got the gap down to three on one occasion before falling 77-66.
Dordt was 25-73 from the field and 7-29 from the three-point line while converting 9-10 free throws.
Morningside was 32-68 from the field and 9-17 from the free throw line.
Dordt had a 46-41 rebounding advantage but had 12 turnovers to eight for the Mustangs.
Franken had 18 for the Defenders and was 7-16 from the field.
Chad Barkema had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Jesse Jansma had 12 points.
Franken and Chandler Brunsting shared team honors with three assists.
