HOW IT HAPPENED
The Defender men’s basketball team pulled away from a 25-25 first half tie to take control of the game.
A Josh Van Lingen three-point basket tied the game at the 7:47 from of the first half and he knocked down another three-point baskets moments later for a 28-25 lead.
The lead continued to grow to halftime with a 7-2 run capping the period and gave the Defenders a 53-34 advantage.
The lead was between 12 and 20 points most of the second half with Mayville State making a charge to within seven at 88-81 with 3:50 left.
An Alec Henrickson three-point basket put Dordt up by 10 and baskets by Henrickson, Ben Gesink and Chandler Brunsting gave the Defenders a 97-83 lead that was more than enough on the way to the 11-point win.
Dordt converted 33-61 shots and 13-27 three-point baskets.
Mayville State was 31-67 from the field and 10-29 from the three-point arc.
The Defenders had a 47-25 rebounding edge.
Van Lingen had a career high 26 points and was 6-7 from three-point range and he had 15 rebounds.
Henrickson had 19 points and five rebounds.
Garrett Franken was good for 14 points and four rebounds.
Chad Barkema had 13 points and four rebounds with four assists.
Ben Gesink handed out seven assists with nine points and Zach Bussard also had nine points.
Dordt is 3-1 and will travel to Yankton on Wednesday to open GPAC play at Mount Marty.
