Dordt def. Valley City State 90-70
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team earned a 90-70 win over Valley City State on Friday night in Sioux Center.
Dordt started with a 21-4 run capped by a Ben Gesink basket with 13:17 left in the half. The visitors proceeded to crawl back in the game to get within 23-15 with 10:10 left in the half but the Defenders had another run in them as the lead grew to as many as 17 before the hosts settled on a 15 point advantage after a Chandler Brunsting basket for a 41-25 lead.
The Defenders ran off 10 points in a row to start the second half as Garrett Franken and Ben Gesink each had three-point plays and Josh Van Lingen added a basket in the run as well to put Dordt up by 26. Valley City State would trim the lead to 66-54 with 8:55 left but the Vikings got no closer with Dordt again pulling away for the 20 point win.
Dordt was 37-80 from the field and 4-21 from the three-point line while converting 12-19 free throws.
Valley City State was held to 26-73 field goal shooting but did make 12-30 three-point shots for 40 percent success.
Both teams had 47 rebounds. Dordt forced 21 turnovers and committed 12.
Ben Gesink had a career high 23 points on 10-18 shooting and had seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Josh Van Lingen scored 16 with six rebounds and three steals.
Chandler Brunsting scored 13 with seven rebounds.
Cooper Ross, Chad Barkema and Alec Henrickson all had eight points.
Alex Weston scored 16 in the loss off the bench for Valley City State.
Dordt is 2-1 while Valley City State is now 1-2.
Dordt will host Mayville State on Saturday at 3:00.
