Graceland defeats Dordt 76-72
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Graceland Yellow Jackets staged a late rally and nipped the Dordt Defenders in men’s basketball on Tuesday night in Lamoni, Iowa.
Dordt built a seven point lead at halftime and held a lead for much of the second half before the hosts scored the final eight points of the game for their second win of the season.
Graceland converted on its first four three-point shots and had a 14-7 lead with just under four minutes gone in the game. The Defenders cut into the lead and eventually tied the game at 20-20 on an Alec Henrickson three-point basket. Dordt’s first lead came after a basket by Garrett Franken with 6:31 left for a 26-24 lead.
Dordt scored the final six points of the half on a pair of Franken baskets and a steal and basket by Chandler Brunsting at the buzzer for a 44-37 advantage.
The Defenders led much of the second half and had a seven point lead on several occasions but the Yellow Jackets hung around. Dordt’s lead was still 70-65 with 2:33 left in the game but the Yellow Jackets tied it 72-72 with 1:11 left.
Graceland took a 74-72 lead on its next possession and Dordt missed a three-point shot to lead with :17 left. Dordt still had the ball but turned it over and Graceland converted two free throws for the final of 76-72.
Dordt had four players in double figures with Franken leading with 14.
Alec Henrickson and Ben Gesink each had 12 points and Chandler Brunsting added 10.
Chad Barkema and Zach Bussard both had eight points.
Dordt had a 37-31 rebounding advantage but had 20 turnovers.
Dordt was 27-52 shooting from the field and 4-18 from the three-point line. Dordt converted 14-21 free throws but attempted just seven in the second half.
Graceland converted 28-65 shooting and was 12-27 from the three-point line.
Dordt is 1-1 while Graceland is 2-0. Dordt will play Valley City State on Friday.
