Dordt defeats Waldorf 72-61
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt pulled away late and won an 11 point decision from Waldorf on Saturday night in Forest City, Iowa to open the 2018-19 campaign.
Waldorf took an early 16-8 lead but Dordt pulled even with a Chad Barkema basket at the 9:14 mark of the first half at 18-18. Dordt was able to maintain a slight advantage most of the half and led 31-27 before a three-point shot at the horn cut the gap to 31-30 at halftime.
Waldorf regrouped at halftime and had a five point lead 51-46 at the midpoint of the second half. A Josh Van Lingen three-point play with 9:43 left in the game put Dordt up 52-21 and the score was tied several times up to 59-59 when a pair of Cooper Ross free throws put Dordt up 61-59.
Leading 64-61 with 2:31 remaining Dordt got a defensive stop with a missed three-point shot and Alec Henrickson knocked down a pair of free throws for a two-possession lead. Garrett Franken followed with a field goal moments later to go up 68-61 and the Defenders closed the scoring with four made free throws by Chad Barkema for the 72-61 win.
Dordt was 25-53 from the field and 6-16 from the three-point line.
Waldorf was 25-66 from the field and 6-17 from the arc.
The Defenders converted 16-20 free throws while Waldorf was 5-8.
Dordt had a 38-37 rebounding edge and committed eight turnovers to 10 for the hosts.
Van Lingen came off the bench to score 13 with four rebounds and Franken had 12 points with seven rebounds.
Chad Barkema scored ten and Ben Gesink had nine.
Dordt had balanced scoring with eight points each for Henrickson, Zach Bussard and Ross.
Dordt travels to face Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa on Tuesday, October 30.
