HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders women's soccer team defeated Avila University 2-0 in their first game of the season.
The women shook off the long road trip to Kansas City and scored two goals late in the second half to secure the victory. Senior Kenzie Bousma picked up where she left off last year and scored the Defenders first goal in the 71st minute off an assist from Madison Byl. The second goal came from sophomore Alaina Van Zalen in the 86th minute.
The Defender women out shot Avila 12-6 overall and put eight on frame compared to Avila’s three.
Defender goalkeeper Karlee Kuyvenhoven had three saves and secured the shutout.
COACH ELGERSMA SAID
"We played a solid second half and learned a lot. It was a typical first game, and it was good to get it out of our system."
The Defender women will face Ottawa (KS) on Saturday at 12 p.m. to complete the road trip.
