Dordt defeats Park 7-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt softball team never trailed and beat the Park Pirates in game one of their doubleheader in Parkville, Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
The Defenders scored three in the first inning on four hits with Marissa VandenBerg starting the inning with a double. Rachel Evavold knocked in two with a single and later scored on a double steal.
The hosts answered with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
The top of the second inning led to a run on two hits for the Defenders and Dordt scored another in the fourth with Abby Smith scoring on a Marissa VandenBerg single.
Trailing 5-2 the Pirates scored two on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Defenders again had an answer with two runs on two hits in the top of the sixth with Hailey Heeringa knocking in two with a single.
The seven Dordt runs were enough as Park scored one in the seventh while leaving a runner on when the game ended.
Tianna Top was able to sidestep trouble while scattering 12 hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Marissa Vanden Berg had three this with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Hailey Heeringa had two singles and three runs batted in and Abby Smith had two singles with two runs scored.
Park outhit Dordt 12-11 with Park getting charged with two errors.
