Dordt defeats Peru State 5-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to forge a 5-4 win over Peru State in non-conference softball on Friday afternoon in Peru, Nebraska.
Peru State got two runs in the bottom of the third on two hits and Dordt eventually answered with a run in the fifth inning on two hits and two errors. The two errors led to the unearned run.
The hosts followed with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth and Dordt chipped into the lead with a run in the sixth inning when Rachel Evavold banged a triple that scored Hailey Heeringa.
After a scoreless bottom of the inning Dordt came alive with three runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the seventh inning. Kristen Vander Hart and Marissa VandenBerg reached second and third with a single and double and dropped fly ball allowed both to score and tie the game.
Another error allowed pinch runner Natalie Vos to score the eventual game winner as Peru State was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Dordt had a 7-4 hits advantage and took advantage of five Peru State errors.
Rachel Evavold and Carley De Roin each had two hits. Corinne May had two runs batted in.
Six of Dordt’s hits were singles with Vander Hart’s double accounting for Dordt’s only extra base hit.
Rachel Evavold was the winning pitcher with four runs allowed on four hits with eight strikeouts and two bases on balls.
Dordt evens its record at 3-3 going into a doubleheader with Park at Parkville, Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
Peru State stands 0-2 after its season opener.
