Dordt defeats Valley City State 3-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt came from a run down in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 win over the Valley City State Vikings late Monday night in Arizona.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning with Hailey Heeringa clubbing a solo homerun with one out in the home half of the frame for to tie the game 1-1. Dordt sidestepped trouble earlier in the inning when Valley City State left the bases loaded and were unable to do more than one run of damage despite two errors by the Defenders.
Valley City State took the lead with an unearned run in the sixth inning for a 2-1 advantage and Dordt stranded two runners in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Vikings had a chance to add to the lead in the seventh but had a player caught between third and home for the second out of the inning and the next batter flew out with runners on second and third.
After a ground out to start the bottom of the seventh inning Corinne May was hit by a pitch. Jessica Oules followed with a walk and a passed ball advanced the two runners to second and third. Kristen Vander Hart reached on an error to load the bases. Krista Bousema delivered a single to tie the game and Marissa VandenBerg came through with a run scoring single to end the game.
Dordt was outhit 6-5 and won in spite of five errors.
VandenBerg had two hits along with Heeringa.
Rachel Evavold got the pitching win with six hits allowed, one walk and six strikeouts. She did not give up an earned run.
