Missouri Baptist defeats Dordt 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-14)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College challenged no. 2 ranked Missouri Baptist on Thursday night, March 1, but fell 3-1 in league play in Sioux Center.
The Defenders started with a 14-9 lead in set one after a service error by the Spartans. Missouri Baptist responded with a seven point run and forged a 25-20 win in set one.
Dordt bounced back to take a 16-9 lead in set two and fought off the rally attempts by the Spartans in taking a 25-20 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The Spartans seemed to have control in set three with a 16-10 advantage and they maintained the six point lead to 21-15 when Dordt mounted a rally. A pair of blocks by the Defenders followed by an Alex Durbin ace serve cut the lead to 21-19 and a Kal Bryan kill made the difference 21-20. The two teams swapped points to 22-21 and the visitors closed with a three point streak to win 25-21.
A 12-5 start in set four gave Missouri Baptist the push it needed on the way to a 25-14 win.
Dordt had a .042 kill efficiency with 27 kills. Missouri Baptist had 51 kills and a .267 kill efficiency.
Missouri Baptist had a 42-29 digs advantage while Dordt had 10 points on blocks to six for the Spartans.
Ben Tiemersma led Dordt with ten kills and Tristan Verduzco and Kal Bryan each had six.
Tyler Postma recorded 26 assists and Cobi Jones had four service aces and seven digs.
Dordt is 1-9 overall and 1-5 in league play. Missouri Baptist is 13-0 and 5-0.
Dordt will face Trinity Christian on Friday night, March 2 before facing Robert Morris and Cincinnati Christian on Saturday, March 3. The Friday match is at Palos Heights, Illinois and the Saturday matches are hosted by Robert Morris in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
