HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College lost its season opener on Tuesday night, January 30 at the De Witt Gym in men’s volleyball play.
The Defenders battled to a 10-10 after an Alex Durbin and Tyler Postma block in set one but the Mustangs scored the next three points on kills for a 13-10 lead and Dordt was never closer than two the rest of the set in falling 25-16.
Set two saw the Defenders jump out to an 8-2 lead and they maintained a six point advantage at 15-9. The Mustangs scored seven of the next eight points for a 16-16 tie and the teams were tied again at 17 but Dordt had control with a 6-1 run for a 23-18 lead. Morningside rallied to within 23-22 but Dordt got to set point on a service error. An attack error by the Defenders cut the lead to 24-23 and tied it on a kill. Both teams had a pair of set point serves but a kill and an ace by the Mustangs gave them a 29-27 win.
Dordt rallied to tie set three 16-16 and fought back again from a 21-16 deficit to make it 22-21 but the Defenders got no closer in falling 25-21.
Dordt got 14 kills from Ben Tiemersma and 18 assists by Tyler Postma.
Mark Schussler got to 11 digs and Caleb Brandsma had nine with Cobi Jones getting to eight.
Shavon Barker got to six block assists for the Defenders and Tyler Postma was in on one solo block and five block assists.
Dordt recorded 11 points on blocks while Morningside had nine points on blocks.
Morningside recorded five service aces to a pair for Dordt.
Dordt had a .029 kill efficiency and Morningside hit for a .127 kill efficiency.
Dordt will host Lindenwood-Belleville on Friday night, February 2 at 7:00 pm.
