Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 2-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 2-1 GPAC win over Briar Cliff on Wednesday afternoon in Sioux Center.
The Defenders got a run in the first inning with Hannah Sikkema doubling with one out and Rachel Evavold knocked her in with a run scoring single.
After a scoreless second the Chargers scored one run on three hits but stranded two runners when the inning ended on a ground out.
Neither team had more than a runner on base through the seventh inning and the game went to extra innings.
Evavold worked a three up three down inning in the eighth and Dordt mounted its threat. Back to back singles by Sikkema and Evavold started the inning but a double play got the lead runner at third. Hailey Heeringa then delivered a double to deep rightfield that scored Jennifer Kooiker who was pinch running.
Evavold went the distance on the mound and allowed one run on five hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
Dordt had a 10-5 hits advantage.
Sikkema was 4-4 at the plate with a run scored.
Evavold was 2-3 with one run batted in and a walk.
Hailey Heeringa was 2-4 with a run batted in and Jessica Oules was 2-3 as well. Both of Heeringa’s hits were doubles.
