Dordt defeats Hastings 6-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders overcame a sluggish start to defeat Hastings 6-4 in GPAC softball play on Saturday, April 21. The win was a sweep for the Defenders and got them back to .500 in the GPAC for the first time this season.
Hastings started the first with a pair of singles and got a run in with a wild pitch. Two strikeouts later another wild pitch resulted in Alyssa Carter attempting to score but she was retired when Abby Smith’s toss to Tianna Top covering home plate was in time for the third out.
Hannah Sikkema and Rachel Evavold had a two run homerun and a solo homerun for a 3-1 lead.
Hastings tied it with two runs on three hits in the second and took a brief lead with a run in the top of the third,
Corinne May and Carley DeRoin each had run scoring hits—May a single and DeRoin a double that produced a 5-4 lead and Dordt got a run for insurance with a run scoring single by Kristen Vander Hart in the bottom of the sixth.
Hastings did threaten in the seventh with two singles with two outs but Top got a strikeout to finish the game.
Top improved to 7-7 while allowing three earned runs. She walked one and struck out four.
Rachel Evavold and Summer Jansen each had two hits but Dordt was outhit 12-9.
Hannah Sikkema had two runs batted in.
Jessica Oules and Carley De Roin each had doubles.
Dordt is 18-15 overall and 7-7 in league play. Dordt is 7-1 in its last eight conference games.
The Defenders will host Waldorf in non-conference play on Tuesday night, April 24 starting at 4:00.
