Dordt defeats Doane 7-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender softball team fought off a Doane rally and won a 7-6 decision from the Tigers in Crete, Nebraska on Friday afternoon.

Dordt scored one in the first with Summer Jansen plating Rachel Evavold.  Dordt scored three more in the top of the fourth on five hits with Marissa VandenBerg getting two of the runs batted in with a single.

Doane started its comeback with a two run fourth inning and then tied it with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning.

Dordt broke the tie with three runs in the seventh inning. Hailey Heeringa got one run in with a fielder’s choice in the inning and two errors led to a couple unearned runs for Dordt.

Doane wasn’t done and came back with two runs in the seventh inning and had runners at first and second before a ground out ended the game.

THE NUMBERS

Doane outhit Dordt 15-11.

Tianna Top earned the win with two earned runs allowed with three strikeouts and one walk while scattering the 15 hits.

Marissa VandenBerg had three hits with two runs batted in and Rachel Evavold had two hits. Both had one double each.

Dordt is 15-14 and 4-6 in the league and won four in a row in two doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday.

Doane is 23-15 and 7-5 in the league.

Dordt is scheduled to return to play on Monday, April 16 at Dakota Wesleyan.
