Dordt defeats Doane 70-68

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team trailed most of the second half but prevailed on a long jump shot by Erika Feenstra at the buzzer to take a two point win from Doane on the road Saturday afternoon.

Dordt got a three-point play from Kenzie Bousema to start the scoring but relinquished the lead for the rest of the first quarter at the 4:11 mark on a three-point basket by Doane's leading scorer McKenna Dodd.

Dordt trailed by as many as 10 near the end of the first quarter but got a three-point basket by Annie Rhinesmith with 21 seconds left and trailed 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Dordt came back to take a brief lead in the second quarter on a Feenstra basket but the lead was short lived as Doane retook the lead at 32-31 and led 37-33 at the break with Feenstra getting a basket just before the half ended to cut the lead from six to four.

Doane pushed the lead up to nine midway through the third quarter but a basket by Baylee Tetzlaff capped a 9-2 run near the end of the quarter and Dordt was down 53-49 entering the fourth quarter.

Doane again gained a substantial lead with a 61-53 advantage with 6:19 remaining.  A pair of Faith Anderson three-point baskets helped cut the lead to 63-59 and Ebby Prewitt's three-point shot with 3:22 left bot Dordt to within 65-64.  The lead was still one for Doane after a Rachel Evavold basket with 1:55 left at 67-66.

Feenstra was able to gather in a Siennah Stamness shot that was blocked and got fouled with :13 left and made both free throws to give Dordt a 68-67 lead. Doane got the ball to Cortney Arkfeld on the ensuing possession and she was fouled, converting one of two free throws with :07 left.

After two timeouts and a foul the Defenders got the ball to Annie Rhinesmith on a sideline out of bounds play.  Rhinesmith drove to the basket and was cut off and found Feenstra on the wing.  The freshman took one dribble and knocked down the long two-point shot to give Dordt the GPAC win.

COACH KYLE LINDBERGH SAID

"We wanted a double high ball screen--we weren't sure if we were going to see zone or man so we went with a set where that we could regardless of if we saw zone or man. We wanted a ball screen for Annie to look for Rachel Evavold  or Erika in the corner.  Annie couldn’t quite turn the corner and gave Erika just a little bit of space and she was able to take a dribble and nothing but net. Because we have good players the play had a chance to work."
