Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 81-75
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College secured a spot in the GPAC post-season tournament with a win over the Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City.
The 81-75 decision denied Briar Cliff a share of the GPAC title and allowed Dordt to keep its season alive with a quarterfinal round berth.
Dordt got up 11-4 with three Marcus Winterfeld three-point baskets and a pair of Ben Gesink free throws. The Chargers responded by seemingly taking control with a 25-15 advantage with 8:58 left in the half. The Defenders battled back to within striking distance and took the lead at 37-36 on a Kyle Lang basket with 26 seconds left in the half but two free throws allowed by Briar Cliff to lead 38-37 at the intermission.
Back to back three-point baskets by Chad Barkema and Gesink put Dordt up five and the Defenders would lead until the 12:39 mark when Briar Cliff went ahead 57-55. The score was tied at 57 and 59 before back to back three-point baskets by Chandler Brunsting extended the Dordt lead to 65-59 and a Gesink tip in with 3:42 extended the lead to eight.
Briar Cliff rallied to within two on two occasions and had the ball down three with 36 seconds left but were unable to convert and Dordt made five of six free throws in the closing moments to win by six.
Dordt was 25-58 from the field and 24-25 from the free throw line and made 21 straight free throws.
Marcus Winterfeld had 27 points on 7-13 shooting and he grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists with two steals.
Chad Barkema and Ben Gesink each had 13 points and Barkema had eight rebounds to lead the team.
Chandler Brunsting and Alec Henrickson each had eight points with Brunsting taking down seven rebounds.
Briar Cliff converted 26-61 field goals and 4-25 three-point shots.
Dordt had a 35-31 rebounding edge.
Dordt is 12-18 overall and 6-12 in the GPAC.
Briar Cliff is 24-6 overall and 13-5 in the league.
Dordt will travel to Morningside in Sioux City on Wednesday for GPAC Quarterfinal round action tipping off at 7:00.
