Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 89-80
HOW IT HAPPENED
Briar Cliff overcame a seven point deficit in the second half and improved to 8-1 in GPAC play with an 89-80 win over the Dordt Defenders in men’s basketball at the De Witt Gym on Saturday afternoon, January 13.
Dordt trailed by seven early in the game but took a lead at 28-27 on a Marcus Winterfeld free throw. The Chargers would regain a seven point lead and were up 39-32 with 1:48 left in the half. Dordt scored the final six points of the half on baskets by Winterfeld and Ben Gesink and a pair of free throws by Winterfeld.
The Defenders took the lead early in the second half and built a seven point lead and a Jesse Jansma basket put Dordt up 69-62 with 7:22 left in the game. Briar Cliff took the lead on a Jackson Lamb basket with 5:25 left and the lead expanded to 76-69 on another Lamb basket with 3:36 left.
Dordt eventually trailed 81-71 before rallying to within four on a Ben Gesink basket with less than a minute remaining but the Chargers made their free throws to finish the game with an 89-80 final.
Dordt was 32-67 from the field and 12-21 from the free throw line. Dordt’s three-point success rate was 4-22.
Briar Cliff was 22-46 from the field and 7-23 from the arc. Briar Cliff took advantage of 45 trips to the free throw line and made 38.
Briar Cliff had a 35-34 rebounding advantage. Dordt forced 17 turnovers and Briar Cliff had 14.
Marcus Winterfeld and Kyle Lang each had 13 points and Ben Gesink had 12. Jesse Jansma added ten and Chandler Brunsting had eight with seven rebounds.
Jackson Lamb led Briar Cliff with 20 points.
Dordt is 9-12 overall and 3-6 in the league. Briar Cliff is 19-2 and 8-1.
Dordt hosts Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night.
