Fisk defeats Dordt 87-86

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt College was unable to complete a late comeback and fell by one point to the visiting Fisk Bulldogs on Friday, November 24 in the Dordt College Thanksgiving Classic. Fisk secured the 87-86 win and overcame an eight point second-half deficit in the process.

Dordt got out to a 17-5 lead with 15:55 left in the first half after Jesse Jansma made back to back three-point baskets. 

Fisk bounced back to tie the game 20-20 with a three-point basket with 9:46 and the game was back and forth the rest of the half with Dordt’s lead waivering between six and two points the rest of the half before settling for a five point lead 42-37.

Marcus Winterfeld had a two point basket to start the scoring in the second half and Chad Barkema gave Dordt an eight point lead with 19:02 left for Dordt’s biggest lead of the game.

Fisk tied it at 59 and took their first lead of the game with 15:24 left with a field goal for a 61-59 advantage.  Dordt regained the lead and was up 65-62 off an Alec Henrickson field goal with 10:35 left.  Fisk took control and built the lead to 84-78 and the lead was six with 1:41 left in the game. 

Chandler Brunsting converted a three-point shot and was fouled to cut the gap to 84-82. After a Brunsting steal Chad Barkema converted a basket with 1:08 left for a tie at 84. 

Fisk’s El Paso Pitts gave the Bulldogs an 86-84 lead with a basket. Dordt got a shot off with the shot clock winding down but missed but Marcus Winterfeld secured the offensive rebound and was fouled.  Winterfeld made one of two with :14 left in the game and Fisk was fouled.  The Bulldogs missed the front end of the one and one and Dordt raced the other way but a Brunsting three from the wing was off the mark and the ball went out of bounds off of Dordt.

With under a second left the inbounds pass was tipped and Brunsting’s shot off the steal was too strong and Fisk survived.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt was 31-64 from the field and 10-33 from the three-point line. 

Fisk was 31-63 from the field and 8-15 from the arc.

Dordt converted 13-26 free throws while Fisk was 16-22.

Dordt had a 43-34 rebounding edge but committed 17 turnovers to 14 for the Bulldogs.

Marcus Winterfeld led all players with 19 points and five rebounds.

Chad Barkema converted 14 points and had nine rebounds.

Alec Henrickson had 13 points and four assists and ben Gesink added 11 points.

Chandler Brunsting had a game high 12 reobounds and added seven points with three assists.

Fisk had five players in double figures led by Addison Miller with 17.

Dordt is 5-5 while Fisk is 6-2.  Dordt faces Trinity Christian on Saturday at 2:00 while Fisk will face Northwestern at 4:00 pm.
