Valley City State defeats Dordt 85-82

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball rallied from a 10 point second half deficit but couldn’t hold a slim lead down the stretch and lost an 85-82 decision to Valley City State in North Dakota on Friday night.

A Chad Barkema basket with 13:01 left in the half for a 16-10 lead but the Vikings responded and pushed out to a 46-37 lead at halftime.

Dordt first three baskets of the second half were three-point baskets and the lead went from 47-37 to 51-46.  A Kobe Kritchley basket kept the difference at three and Alec Henrickson scored a two point basket to get within 54-41.  The Defenders tied the game with a Chandler Brunsting two point basket and eventually led by a 73-69 difference after a pair of Henrickson free throws with 5:35 left in the game.

The hosts responded by taking a two point lead but Dordt cut the lead to 81-80 when Brunsting made a free throw and Dordt forced a tie-up on his missed free throw and Kyle Lang was fouled and made two free throws with :30 left in the game.

Valley City State quickly raced down the floor and made a lay up and Dordt was unable to get a clean shot off and was forced to foul on the rebound. Jayden Ferguson made both free throws for the Vikings and Kyle Lang’s three-point shot from the right wing was off the mark as time expired.
