Valley City State defeats Dordt 85-82
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball rallied from a 10 point second half deficit but couldn’t hold a slim lead down the stretch and lost an 85-82 decision to Valley City State in North Dakota on Friday night.
A Chad Barkema basket with 13:01 left in the half for a 16-10 lead but the Vikings responded and pushed out to a 46-37 lead at halftime.
Dordt first three baskets of the second half were three-point baskets and the lead went from 47-37 to 51-46. A Kobe Kritchley basket kept the difference at three and Alec Henrickson scored a two point basket to get within 54-41. The Defenders tied the game with a Chandler Brunsting two point basket and eventually led by a 73-69 difference after a pair of Henrickson free throws with 5:35 left in the game.
The hosts responded by taking a two point lead but Dordt cut the lead to 81-80 when Brunsting made a free throw and Dordt forced a tie-up on his missed free throw and Kyle Lang was fouled and made two free throws with :30 left in the game.
Valley City State quickly raced down the floor and made a lay up and Dordt was unable to get a clean shot off and was forced to foul on the rebound. Jayden Ferguson made both free throws for the Vikings and Kyle Lang’s three-point shot from the right wing was off the mark as time expired.
THE NUMBERS
Dordt converted 29-62 field goals for 47 percent and made 11-27 three-point shots. Dordt also converted 13-16 free throws.
Valley City State was 34-47 from the field and 5-9 from the arc and converted 12-19 free throws.
The Vikings had a 26-20 rebounding edge and had 16 turnovers to Dordt’s 12.
Alec Henrickson had 20 points and three assists with three steals.
Chandler Brunsting added 12 points on 4-4 shooting with 2-2 free throws.
Chad Barkema had 11 points and Josh Van Lingen 10 with Lang adding nine.
Ferguson scored 19 to lead Valley City State.
Dordt is 1-1 and Valley City State is 2-2.
Dordt will face Jamestown Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
