Dordt defeats Northern Illinois 5-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Blades went on the road and took a 5-2 win over Northern Illinois in non-league hockey on Friday.
The Blades got a goal from Caleb Groot in the first period off an assist by Willhelm Oppedyk and Kyle Laarman and Groot added a goal early in the second period for a 2-0 lead off an assist by Mark Schouten and Jaren Brue.
Jacob Petrie added a goal moments later for a 3-0 lead.
Northern Illinois got on the board with goals at the 15:40 and 11:47 mark to cut the lead to 3-2 but Groot knocked one in between the pipes at the 10:48 mark to cap an eventful first 10 minutes of the second period and gave the Blades a 4-2 lead in the process.
Keaton De Jong capped the scoring late in the third period off an assist by Groot to make the final 5-2.
David Burns recorded 31 saves in goal for the Blades as Dordt had a 44-33 shots on goal advantage.
