Dordt defeats South Dakota State 7-6 (overtime)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt’s Mark Schouten scored at the 1:50 mark of overtime to send the Dordt Blades to a 7-6 win at home on Friday night in non-league play against South Dakota State.
The Blades came from behind to take a brief lead at the end of second period but couldn’t fight off the Jackrabbits as the visitors scored a goal early in the third to knot the score.
Keaton De Jong and Logan Visser scored the first two goals of the game with De Jong getting one in at the 16:20 mark of the first period and Visser’s came at the 8:17 mark off assists by Caleb Groot and De Jong.
The visitors answered with a goal with 5:53 left in the period but Kyle Laarman was equal to the task with a goal at the 5:13 mark of the period. The fireworks continued with a South Dakota State getting to with 3-2 before Schouten’s goal late in the first period put Dordt up 4-2.
After the intermission the Jackrabbits scored three straight goasl from the 14:52 mark to the 12:14 mark of the period for a 5-4 advantage. Schouten and Caleb Koomans had the answer for Dordt with Koomans’s goal coming with just 30 seconds left in the period.
South Dakota State tied the game with 19:13 left in regulation and the teams were scoreless until Schouten gave Dordt the game winner.
Dordt had a 47-43 shots on goal advantage.
Bryce Andry got the win in goal.
Schouten had three goals and two assists on his return from injury suffered in November.
Dordt will travel to Brookings for a 1:00 pm faceoff on Saturday, January 20.
