Kansas defeats Dordt 7-6 (overtime)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Blades opened the 2017-18 season at home on Friday and absorbed a 7-6 overtime loss.
The Blades, playing front of a near capacity crowd, held on brief lead in the contest that needed extra time to decide.
Dordt’s first goal was scored by Keaton De Jong off assists from Seth Vandergugten and Caleb Groot with 18:17 left in the first period to tie the score 1-1.
Kansas scored again at the 18:00 mark and Dordt answered with two goals by Mark Schouten off assists both times by Jacob Petrie. The second goal came with 11:50 left in the first period. The 3-2 lead stood until the 4:34 mark of the period when the visitors tied it.
Two goals in the first six minutes of the second period put Kansas up 5-3 but the Bladdes had an answer with Caleb Groot scoring off an assist by Vandergugten. Schouten tied it at the 3:14 mark of the second period and that tie lasted until the 13:22 mark when Kansas re-took the lead.
6-5 advantage stood until Schouten scored his fourth goal with just 2:30 left in regulation. Tied 6-6 the teams went to an extra session and Kansas won it with a goal at the 3:06 mark of the overtime.
The Blade had 27 shots on goal to 51 shots on goal for the visitors.
David Burns worked in goal for the Blades and had 44 saves.
Schouten had four goals.
Petrie got credit for three assists and Vandergugten and Groot each had two.
The teams will play again Saturday afternoon at 4:15.
COACH VAN NIEJENHUIS SAID
“We’ve got a young team…we’ve got a really young team and they’ve learned a lot in the last couple weeks. Every period we made some adjustments and carried it forward. I saw a lot of improvement over the 60 minutes. I think for us we need to take care of the little details…understanding your responsibilities and taking care of them…not chasing things around.”
