Dakota Wesleyan defeats Dordt 62-52
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dakota Wesleyan outlast Dordt in a wild contest in Mitchell, South Dakota.
Dordt led twice but couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Tigers finished their 2017 campaign with the win.
Dordt struck first with a touchdown pass from Brock Lamle to Levi Jungling for a 38 yard score just 1:37 into the game.
Wesleyan scored the next two touchdowns for a 14-6 lead and Dordt eventually answered with a Jungling 94 yard run on the final play of the first quarter to draw the Defenders to within 14-12.
Dordt’s Keithen Drury plowed into the end zone with 3:16 left in the half to cut the lead to 21-18 at the time and the teams combined for three scores over the final 2:15 of the half and Wesleyan led 34-25 at halftime with Drury taking a screen pass 48 yards for a score in the explosion.
Dordt forced a turnover with Nathan Kabongo picking off a Dillon Turner pass on the first possession of the half and Jake Dodge finished the ensuing drive with a seven yard pass from Lamle. Dordt forced a punt on Wesleyan’s next drive and Drury went 98 yards for a school record touchdown run, breaking the one set by Jungling earlier in the game. Dordt had a 38-34 lead and had a chance to build on the lead after a fumble was forced on a sack but the drive couldn’t pick up steam and the field goal attempt was blocked.
Wesleyan retook the lead on with a 14 play, 74 yard drive and got up by two scores early in the fourth quarter and Dordt was unable to keep pace with two touchdown passes to Jungling of five and 17 yards.
Dordt had 697 yards of offense to 612 for Wesleyan.
Dordt passed for 415 yards and Wesleyan had 386. Dordt ran for 282 and Wesleyan 226.
Jungling caught a school record 14 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 95 yards on four carries.
Brock Lamle was 23-40 passing for 415 yards and five touchdowns.
Keithen Drury ran 12 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 71 yards and one score.
Levi Schoonhoven had 14 rushes for 53 yards. Jake Dodge caught four passes for 44 yards.
Josiah Kotte had 11 solo tackles and Joey Lovetere had eight.
Nathan Kabongo, Arie Hoekstra and David Kacmarynski all had seven solo tackles. Kacmarynski had two sacks.
Wesleyan’s Dillon Turner finished with 108 yards rushing on 24 carries and scored twice and threw three touchdown passes while completing 28-39 passes for 386 yards. Hayden Adams had 14 catches for 228 yards.
Dordt is 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the league. Dordt concludes the season next week at home against Briar Cliff.
Dakota Wesleyan finishes the season 6-5.
