Morningside defeats Dordt 9-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College surrendered five runs in the seventh inning and never recovered in falling to Morningside in the first round of the GPAC Tournament in Fremont, Nebraska on Thursday, May 4. Dordt will play in an elimination game at 3:00 on Friday, May 5.
Morningside scored a run on a solo homerun in the fourth inning and the score remained 1-0 into the top of the sixth when Dordt rallied. Jake Thayer was hit by a pitch with two-outs and stole second base. Taylor Neuroth delivered a run scoring single to tie the game. Dordt eventually loaded the bases but a ground out to third ended the threat.
Morningside wasted no time with back to back solo homeruns to lead off the inning and then added a three-run homerun in the seventh inning to go up 6-1. Three more runs in the eighth by the Mustangs extended the lead to 9-1 with Dordt’s Travis Waara singling in Zach Fowler in the ninth for the 9-2 final.
Dordt was outhit 15-4.
All of Dordt’s hits were singles by Neuroth, Cam Gingerich, Josh Van Eps and Travis Waara.
Morningside had the power game going with five total homeruns.
Brandon Fokkema takes the loss after going six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. Fokkema is now 5-3.
Michael Grady, Luke Drooger and Tyler Wiedner all appeared in relief.
Dordt will play in an elimination game on Friday at 3:00 pm against the loser of Dakota Wesleyan and Midland. Dordt is now 21-25.
