Mount Marty defeats Dordt 8-6
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mount Marty Lancers overcame an early deficit and defeated Dordt 8-6 in game one of their doubleheader in Sioux Center on Thursday, April 27.
Dordt got a run in the first inning with Cam Gingerich knocking a single to right-centerfield to score Taylor Neuroth after Neuroth doubled with one out.
Dordt added three runs in the second inning with all of the offense coming after two outs were recorded. Parker Schutt walked and Travis Waara added a single. A Jake Thayer single scored Schutt and Waara with Waara coming across on an error on the play. Neuroth doubled for the second time in the game to plate Thayer and the score was 4-0.
Mount Marty started its comeback with a three run third inning. A leadoff walk started the threat but the next two batters were retired before two more batters earned walks. A single scored two runs and a wild pitch allowed another run to score to make it 4-3.
A five run sixth inning put the Lancers up for good. Dordt got a runner on in the sixth when Zach Fowler singled but he was left stranded. The Defenders did threaten in the seventh with Colton Van Otterloo knocking one run in with a single and another run came in on a bases loaded ground out. The Defenders had the tying run at first base when the game ended on a ground out.
Dordt was outhit 8-6.
Taylor Neuroth and Travis Waara each had two hits. Neuroth had a pair of doubles and Waara had a pair of singles with two runs scored.
Parker Schutt had a single and was walked twice and scored two runs.
Jake Thayer had two runs batted in.
Connor Hopkins took the loss in the start and allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out five with four walks and worked five and a third innings.
Cole Vande Vegte and Andrew Vander Hart appeared in relief with Vander Hart working a scoreless seventh with one walk and one strikeout issued.
