Doane defeats Dordt 8-7


Dordt College lost an 8-7 decision to Doane in Crete, Nebraska as the Defenders had their hopes of back to back sweeps dashed by a six run seventh inning but the hosts.

Dordt scored a pair of runs in the first inning when Jake Thayer scored on a throwing error and Zach Fowler knocked in Cam Gingerich with a single.

Doane stranded a pair of runners in the second and Dordt responded with a Colton Van Otterloo single that scored Gingerich for a 3-0 lead.  Doane was able to strike back with two runs in the fifth on three hits and an error. 

Leading 3-2, the Defenders got an RBI ground out by Josh Van Eps for a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning and the visitors added a run in the seventh when Cam Gingerich scored on a wild pitch and the Defenders were up 5-2. 

The Tigers eventually took the lead with the six run seventh inning as they capitalized on five hits and three errors.  Dordt kept within striking distance by forcing Doane to leave the bases loaded at the end of the inning.

Trailing 8-5, Dordt stranded two in the eighth inning and then scored two in the ninth inning but left the tying run at first base when the inning ended on a fly out.


Doane outhit Dordt 13-12.

Michael Grady took the loss after allowing five earned runs on 13 hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Cole Samuelson came on in relief and pitched an inning and a third with a base on balls and five strikeouts.

Gingerich was 2-4 with a single and double and four runs scored.

Colton Van Otterloo was 3-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in and Zach Fowler knocked in two with a single and a sacrifice fly.

Dordt is now 11-11 in the GPAC and 18-21 overall.

Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 25 in GPAC play.
