Dordt defeats Doane 5-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College never trailed an earned a 5-3 win over the Doane Tigers in game one of their doubleheader in Crete, Nebraska on Satuday, April 22.
The Defenders got a sacrifice fly from Zach Fowler in the first inning that scored Jake Thayer. The teams were unable to score again until the fourth when Parker Schutt singled in Fowler after Fowler walked to start the inning. Schutt’s single came with two outs in the inning and came one frame after Doane left the bases loaded in the home half of the third.
The Tigers did score a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning and tied the game 2-2 but the tie was short lived as Gingerich doubled in Jake Thayer for a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
Dordt added to the lead with Gingerich knocking another double that scored Tayler Neuroth and Colton Van Otterloo had a single that got Gingerich in for a 5-2 cushion.
The Tigers did threaten in the bottom of the seventh but the threat ended with the tying run at the plate as Luke Drooger got the final out of his complete game with a strikeout looking after Doane scored a run on a combination of a single, balk and two ground outs.
Luke Drooger was the winning pitcher and struck out three with five bases on balls. He allowed six hits and earned his first win of the season with the complete game.
Jake Thayer was 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored.
Cam Gingerich was 2-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in and he walked once. Gingerich also had two doubles.
Dordt had an 8-6 hits advantage.
Van Otterloo, Fowler and Schutt all had a run batted in.
