Morningside defeats Dordt 3-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College surrendered a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and lost a 3-1 decision to the Morningside Mustangs in game one of their doubleheader on Friday, April 7.
The Defenders got their run in the bottom of the fourth when Cam Gingerich singled and Colton Van Otterloo was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third and Zach Fowler grounded out to the right side of the infield to get Gingerich in. A ground out ended the inning with Van Otterloo on third base.
In the top of the fifth inning Morningside broke through with its first hit and runs of the game. A single to centerfield followed by a walk got runners at first and second and a Nate DeChained double got the two runners in.
Morningside’s Andrew Kasperbauer led off the sixth inning with a homerun and the 3-1 lead held as Dordt stranded a base runner each in the sixth and seventh innings.
Connor Hopkins was saddled with his first loss of the seven after going five and a third innings with seven strikeouts, seven walks and three runs allowed.
Cole Samuelson recorded the final five outs and walked two with two strikeouts and faced seven batters.
Cam Gingerich had two hits and scored Dordt’s run.
Dordt’s other two hits were singles by Taylor Neuroth and Zach Fowler.
Richard Mitchell pitched five innings and got the win with four strikeouts and three hits allowed.
