Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 8-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Briar Cliff Chargers held on to defeat Dordt College 8-5 in game one of their baseball doubleheader in Sioux Center on Friday, March 31.
Briar Cliff scored first with a run on two hits and a walk in the top of the second inning.
The Chargers added five runs on four hits and an error in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Dordt responded with four runs int eh fourth inning with Trent Roose, Zach Fowler and Josh Van Eps all singling to load the bases. Jacob Monsma singled with one out to get a run in and Taylor Neuroth had a single to push a second run across. A fielder’s choice allowed a third run to score and Jake Thayer singled in Monsma to end the scoring and get Dordt within 6-4.
Each team scored a run in the fifth with Dordt getting its run on a Chris Schrieber single that got Trent Roose across to keep Dordt within 7-5.
The Defenders led the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded two more runners in the sixth and allowed a solo homerun in the seventh that finished the scoring 8-5.
Dordt had an 11-9 hits advantage.
Cameron Gingerich, Zach Fowler and Josh Van Eps all had two hits.
Fowler’s double was the only extra base hit of the game for the Defenders.
Trent Roose scored two runs.
Luke Drooger was the pitcher of record for Dordt and allowed seven runs on five walks with two strikeouts.
Andrew Vander Hart pitched two and a third innings and struck out two in relief of Drooger.
Tyler Delperdang got the win for Briar Cliff with four innings pitched and struck out three.
