Dordt defeats Concordia 8-7 in 13 innings
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College was able to squeeze out an 8-7 win in 13 innings in game one of its doubleheader with Concordia in Seward, Nebraska. The Defenders and Bulldogs took over four hours to decide the extra inning contest.
The Defenders scored a run in the first inning when Taylor Neuroth singled and advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error for a 1-0 lead.
Dordt worked for three walks in the third inning to start the frame and Colton Van Otterloo had a single to score a run. Trent Roose walked with the bases loaded for another run and Zach Fowler had a run scoring single. Josh Van Eps walked with the bases loaded for a fourth run and Jamison Wyatt walked for a fifth run for a 6-0 lead. A fly out ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Concordia got three runs in the third inning but Dordt got another run back on singles by Neuroth and Van Otterloo for a 7-3 lead.
Concordia scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to tie the game and send the contest to extra innings.
The Defenders loaded the bases in the eighth inning but a strikeout ended the inning.
Concordia had a runner on second in the 12th inning but a double play got the Defenders out of the inning.
Dordt broke through with a Colton Van Otterloo homerun in the 13th inning with two outs and Connor Hopkins came on in relief and recorded the final two outs of the game with a runner on first to give Dordt the one run win.
Dordt had an 11-10 hits advantage and took advantage of 12 bases on balls.
Van Ottleroo and Neuroth had three hits each and Van Otterloo had seven at bats. Van Otterloo knocked in two runs and had three runs batted in and Neuroth had three runs scored and walked twice.
Josh Van Eps had two hits and a run batted in and Jake Thayer walked three times.
The Defenders used six pitchers.
Luke Drooger started the game and went five innigns with six runs allowed on six hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Cole Samuelson pitched an inning and struck out two and walked two.
Jake Thayer pitched three innings in relief and struck out two and Alex Terpstra pitched two innings with a strikeout and a walk.
Andrew Vander Hart got the win with an inning and a third of work and allowed two hits and one base on balls.
Hopkins earned the save and struck out one.
Concordia used six pitchers with its final pitcher, Desmond Pineda went seven innings and allowed three hits and struck out eight while taking the loss.
