Sterling defeats Dordt 4-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sterling College scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a 4-3 win over Dordt in game one of their baseball doubleheader in Sterling, Kansas.
The Defenders got on the board with two in the first inning. Cam Gingerich singled with one out and Colton Van Otterloo also had a single to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runners and passed ball scored Gingerich from third base. Trent Roose got credit for a sacrifice fly and that ended the scoring in the frame.
Sterling got on the board with one run in the fourth inning and Dordt answered with a run in the top of the sixth with Chris Schrieber homering with two outs.
Dordt was retired in the top of the seventh after Jake Thayer doubled with two outs but was stranded. Sterling then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on two hits and an error to sneak out the win.
-Dordt outhit the hosts 6-4.
-Both teams had two errors.
-Jake Thayer had two hits—a double and a single.
-Cameron Gingerich and Colton Van Otterloo each had singles and Van Otterloo was issued Dordt’s only walk.
-Glen Thompson had a single and Chris Schrieber’s homerun accounted for Dordt’s sixth hit.
-Connor Hopkins started the game and went five innings and allowed one run on two hits and walked three with five strikeouts.
-Zach Zylstra pitched an inning and a third and was charged with a run on two hits and struck out one.
-Cole Samuelson took the loss in relief and was charged with two walks.
